Ofsted has praised a special education school in Nuneaton that prioritises 'building positive relationships' with pupils. At ALP Nuneaton on Holman Way, pupils build a sense of safety and trust and engage in learning and experiences.

Inspectors visited the school on Tuesday, November 19, and Wednesday, November 20. Ofsted rated the school's performance as 'Good' overall.

The school has high expectations of pupils and has developed a bespoke system that focuses on attendance, routine, relationships, respect, trust, and teaching. This system teaches pupils about what is expected and provides support to help them experience success and achieve well.

Inspectors said that ALP Nuneaton has an 'ambitious' curriculum in place for pupils. This is delivered through two distinct pathways designed to suit pupils' needs. The school also uses a range of assessments to place pupils on the most suitable learning pathway. The curriculum is said to be 'well planned' and 'sequenced precisely'. Teachers also present information clearly due to their strong subject knowledge and revisit important concepts that help pupils remember and recall their learning.

The school has prioritised early reading to support pupils at all stages. There are many opportunities to develop and promote pupils' love of reading. Pupils enjoy reading to staff daily or listening to stories that staff read and discuss, with well-trained staff effectively delivering the school's phonics programme.

Pupils are also included across all aspects of everyday school life. The school has created an inclusive culture where pupils are encouraged to be themselves. The inclusive culture allows pupils to build their self-confidence and esteem, pupils demonstrate kindness, respect, and tolerance towards each other, and there are positive relationships between peers.

The school demonstrates a commitment to supporting the personal development of pupils. It provides a wide range of opportunities for pupils to engage with their learning, communicate positively, socialise and succeed. There is a 'real buzz' around the school when trips, activities, and clubs take place, such as when pupils transition to outdoor activities such as tobogganing.

In addition, the school has clear expectations for pupils' behaviours. When pupils are unable to meet these, staff use well-considered approaches to help manage their emotional and behaviour needs, and as a result, pupils learn in a calm and inclusive environment.

Leaders at all levels know the school well, and there is a drive for continuous improvement at all levels. Staff says they are well supported, and the school is considerate of their workload and well-being.
