A Nuneaton thug punched a man 20 times before leaving him unconscious on the street. Aaron Murphy approached the victim when he was near a cashpoint outside a shop in Park Road, Bedworth.

CCTV from the scene showed the Attleborough Road resident launching a violent assault on the man. He punched him more than twenty times.

His victim fell to the ground unconscious and Murphy simply left him lying on the street. Police were called and found the man with serious head injuries.

A probe was launched to find his attacker and Murphy was identified as the number one suspect. He went on the run and a public appeal was made for help to find the 21-year-old in December last year.

This included a £1,000 reward. Murphy was eventually arrested at the start of January this year.

He was charged by Warwickshire Police and was sentenced to four years in prison for assault causing grievous bodily harm on November 1 at Warwick Crown Court.

This was combined with 11 years for aggravated burglary and three years for robbery, which took place in Coventry. Both of these investigations were undertaken by West Midlands Police - so he was given a combined total of 18 years in prison.

Speaking after the court case, Detective Sergeant Rich Walker said: "Murphy committed an act of violence which resulted in the victim sustaining serious injuries and falling unconscious – at which point, he walked away and left him on the pavement.

"As his other contemporary sentencings for activities over the border in the West Midlands show, this is a pattern of violent behaviour for Murphy.

“He has earnt every single second of the 18 years he is about to spend behind bars. By the time he gets out the world will have moved on without him – we hope this gives him food for thought."
