Oakland Teachers Picket for Higher Pay and School Resources

Teachers from Oakland’s United School District took to the streets on Thursday, February 21, to picket for higher pay for teachers and school resources, according to local media.

Video from near the United for Success Academy in Oakland shows teachers marching outside the school, carrying signs, and chanting slogans. In one clip, a person can be heard shouting, “Get up, get down, Oakland is a union town.”

Three thousand teachers were anticipated to join the labor action, leaving the district’s 37,000 pupils without instructors until a deal could be set.

Oakland’s Education Association said on Wednesday that the growth of charter schools in the Bay Area had “starved” public schools of necessary resources. Credit: Anonymous via Storyful
