Pensioner Anthony Hawkins has been banned from the roads after driving a clapped-out car. The 73-year-old, formerly of Chantry Road, Newcastle, was stopped by police in Cumbria in January 2023.

Prosecutor Shakeel Ahmed told North Staffordshire Justice Centre: "Police received a call at 5.30pm from members of the public who saw a vehicle with extensive damage, a punctured tyre, and no headlights. The vehicle was missing a front tyre and the headlight was damaged. The dashboard was displaying warning lights. The defendant indicated his intended journey was to a hotel 13 miles from the original location. He was travelling along two dual carriageways and driving on the metal rim."

Hawkins, who will soon be living at Leamington Gardens, May Bank, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving.

Representing himself, Hawkins said he has struggled with mental health issues.

Magistrates sentenced Hawkins to a 12-month community order with a 15-day rehabilitation activity requirement. He was fined £120 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £114 surcharge. He was disqualified from driving for 16 months and must pass an extended test before he can drive again.
