Oasis singer Liam Gallagher has teamed up with North East outdoor clothing brand Berghaus as it stages a revival of some of its best known jackets.

The frontman of the recently-reformed group has unveiled the reissued Trango jacket, telling how he was desperate to get “rich and famous” and buy one of his own when he was a teenager. Fashion shoot pictures have been issued of Liam sporting the coat for Berghaus’ Icons campaign, which is said to celebrate “iconic reunions”.

Berghaus, established in Newcastle by the owners of the LD Mountain Centre and now based in Sunderland, has updated the multi-coloured jacket and two others, the Mera Peak and the Lumley, in moves to “reclaim its rightful place at the heart of British streetwear”.

Over the years, the company’s outerwear has been used by legendary mountaineers including Sir Chris Bonington – who also appears in the campaign and who wore Berghaus when he last summited Everest almost 40 years ago – and Alan Hinkes. But in the 1980s and 1990s the Berghaus brand was adopted by the rave and indie scene, especially after Liam Gallagher wore a jacket made by the North East company during the European leg of Oasis’ Be Here Now tour.

Liam said: “My first encounter with Berghaus was through my brother Noel. He purchased a green one in the late ‘80s and I was always pinching it off him. They were all the rage and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on one of my own. I thought to myself ‘when I’m rich and famous I’m getting myself one.’ I finally did that and I’ve still got it to this day. To be asked to work with them on their comeback means a lot.”

But the jacket’s distinct blue, red and yellow colours have also drawn comparisons with the branding for a certain discount supermarket - which they have been quick to point out. A post by Lidl on X, formerly Twitter, says: “Sound colour choices @liamgallagher”, triggering a stream of comments claiming Liam looks like he’s wearing a £400 Lidl jacket.
