'Obamacare Kid' fears for the future of the landmark healthcare law

One of Barack Obama's signature achievements as president could suffer a high-profile dismemberment by his successor in the White House.

Donald Trump campaigned on a promise to repeal the Affordable Care Act, the health insurance law known as Obamacare, as soon as he becomes president.

The prospect horrifies one family who featured prominently when Obamacare was signed into law seven years ago.

Marci Owens stood next to Mr Obama in that historic moment with her grandmother Gina watching on in the East Room at the White House.

The pair had become advocates for healthcare reform after Marci's mother Tina died following the loss of her job and health insurance.

Marci, 17, who now identifies as a woman, was known as Marcelus in 2010 and was saddled with the label of the 'Obamacare Kid'.

"As he was signing, Joe Biden told me to watch the pen as he was signing. I was just watching the pen go by, and saw his name slowly coming up on the page," she said.

"When he finished the signing, he turned to me and looked at me. I think I was the first person he had shaken hands with after that."

Despite his opposition to Obamacare on the campaign trail, in recent days Mr Trump has talked of ensuring health cover for all Americans.

It may cause a rift with congressional Republicans who have yet to unveil a plan to replace it.

Marci said: "I'll be there fighting for whatever's best for the wellbeing of people and the wellbeing of healthcare in general. Just for that to be right.

"It's ridiculous people have to pay for that and then suffer the consequences of not paying for that."

Gina remembers the ferocious battles for Mr Obama to secure healthcare reform battles which may now be replayed.

She said: "This is a man who wanted equal opportunities for everyone. This is a man who didn't stop at any one group of persons or people to get something across.

"Everything he did has helped every human being across our nation."

And she said one moment remains etched in her memory from that day.

"The look in Obama's eyes when he looked at Marci after signing the bill, that look of him telling Marci without using words 'this is you and me, kid'. That was a moment I'll never forget."
