Yahoo News October’s Cardiff Half Marathon postponed to March 2021
Today, Run 4 Wales, the company behind the Cardiff University Half Marathon and the ABP Newport Wales Marathon have announced their autumn races will be postponed to new spring dates in 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Cardiff Half Marathon, which was due to take place on Sunday 4 October 2020, the same date as the rescheduled London Marathon, has been postponed to Sunday 28 March 2021. The Newport Wales Marathon, originally scheduled for Sunday 25 October 2020, will now take place on Sunday 18 April 2021.
Matt Newman, Run 4 Wales Chief Executive explained, ‘We have been closely monitoring the situation surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak and the guidance issued by the Government and it is now clear that it will not be possible to stage events of this scale in the autumn.
‘We would expect the Welsh Government to make further announcements in the coming months on a gradual return to a full sporting calendar. Although lockdown restrictions have recently been eased in Wales, we understand there is no possibility of 27,500 participants and 100,000 spectators gathering safely in Cardiff on 4 October and thousands more three weeks later in Newport on 25 October.
‘We are also conscious of the inter-dependency on various service providers for events of this size, including the availability of medical support services, volunteers, emergency services, transport and accommodation.
‘Runners registered for both events have been contacted by email confirming the postponements and the options available to them as a result. Details are also available on the event websites.’

According to the race website, runners have the option to get a free transfer to the rescheduled event on March 28, the option to transfer their place to another runner and receive a refund, or run the race virtually between 1-31 October 2020 and 1-31 March 2020. It is not yet clear whether runners can receive a refund without finding a runner to give their place to.
Organisers have also confirmed that as well as the new dates, the 2021 editions of both races will go ahead next autumn as planned.
