Octopus is handing energy customers a whopping FIVE YEARS of free electricity. The energy firm, which is rivalled by the likes of British Gas, OVO, EDF, EON Next and more, has issued the key update amid the ongoing Cost of Living crisis.

As part of its Zero Bills venture, households will have their bills slashed to £0 for five years. It is "a first-of-its-kind energy tariff providing zero bills for five years, guaranteed," the energy firm - which is one of the largest in the country - says.

The tariff is focused on new homes - working with housing developers to do so. The spec includes battery storage, solar panels, and electric heating, with Octopus using "cutting-edge tech to optimise the household’s consumption and energy export in exchange for a zero bill."

"By Zero-ing energy bills for eligible households, we’re hoping to give our customers one less thing to worry about. And while we can’t change the system overnight, the good news is that we’re fast approaching cost parity between low-carbon tech and their gas-guzzling counterparts – meaning that a zero carbon, zero bill world is far from a distant reality for everyone," it says.

Octopus Energy is retrofitting existing homes, and estimates 500,000 UK properties built since 2013 could be eligible to be upgraded to ‘Zero Bills’ standards. Octopus says: "To make it as simple as possible, we’ve a Fair Use Allowance – on total electricity across the year. This is set at approximately double the expected usage, so you’re unlikely ever to exceed it unless you’ve very high heating preferences."

One 70-year-old customer living in a Zero Bills home has gushed over the tariff. Fraser said: "Zero Bills gives you stability. You can plan, without having to worry about big, big bills. You’re helping yourself, you’re helping the planet. It’s a win-win, all round."
