Officials warn of scams amid IRS tax season

TYLER, Texas (KETK) – A special agent from the IRS Criminal Investigation Dallas Field Office spoke with KETK News, sharing tips to avoid being scammed during this tax season.

Why you may owe taxes this year, according to a tax expert

Altemus said that criminal tax scams target people they know they can “sink their hooks into,” urging taxpayers to be diligent and to double check before they submit their forms.

“If there’s things on that form that you may not understand, may seem a little bit off from the figures and information provided, ask questions. In many regards, you are paying them, make sure that you are the client and get what you deserve,” Altemus said.

Altemus said that there are a couple of red flags people should be in the look out for:

  • If the cost to file your taxes is tied to a percentage and not a flat fee.

  • Individuals not signing your return form.
