Modern Family fans may want to look away now - as it's been revealed the show's future is in limbo.

The Hollywood Reporter says that six of the actors' contracts run out at the end of this season, and are yet to be renewed.

The cast in question are the adult stars of the series - Sofia Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Eric Stonestreet, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Ed O'Neill - whose deals come to a close after season eight.

The worries are that a dispute between ABC and studio 20th Century Fox Television could delay talks as it's expected the actors will call for another pay rise.

The six actors are said to be making roughly $350,000 per episode as well as getting a cut of the series' profits.

Cast paychecks became public ahead of Modern Family's fourth season, when all six adult stars banded together to negotiate a substantial pay rise.

With Modern Family continuing its mammoth success (in the States, it's ABC's top-rated show and primetime's No.2 comedy series), it's likely the actors will be asking for more money and negotiations could continue for months.

Fortunately, both the network and studio technically have until mid-May to make a decision about Modern Family's fate, so we can relax for a little while and enjoy the rest of what this series has to offer.

Modern Family is currently airing on ABC in the US and on Sky1 in the UK.

The show recently introduced a trans child actor in what was a television first, and continues to break new ground so we hope it sticks around.

Mostly because we don't know how we'd cope without Phil Dunphy in our lives.
