Six swans have been rescued after becoming covered in an unknown substance at a Leicestershire pond. Fire crews from multiple stations were called to the Hallam Fields area in Birstall on Tuesday (November 12).

The incident happened at a balancing pond on Hallam Field Road and Loughborough Road, a water feature used in developments to prevent flooding by controlling surface water drainage. A Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said the swans appeared to be covered in an "oily substance" when crews arrived.

Firefighters used specialist equipment including a rescue sled to bring the birds to safety, though the source of the pollution remains unknown. Severn Trent confirmed the substance is not related to its operations.

Daniel Borst, Regional Waste Lead at Severn Trent, said teams had returned to the site on Thursday (November 14) to clean-up the area, but the substance was not to do with them. He said: "Following an investigation, we can confirm that the substance in the balancing pond is not related to our operations and has not come from our network. We will assess whether any further action is required and will continue to work to identify the source of this pollution."

The RSPCA have since taken the birds into there care until the pond is safe for them to be returned. The Environment Agency was alerted and referred the matter to Severn Trent after the pollution was discovered.
