Remember the hazy early days of The X Factor when there were only three judges, Kate Thornton was presenting and auditions were held in tiny rooms rather than in front of a massive audience?
We bet you don't remember just how harsh the judges used to be when the programme was in its infancy. How things change...
An old clip from the show has been unearthed on Twitter, where judges Simon Cowell, Sharon Osborne and Louis Walsh were savage to hopeful contestant Samantha, who had cancelled her honeymoon to attend the audition.
I CANNOT BELIEVE HOW HARSH THEY USED TO BE ON THE X FACTOR. This poor woman 😩 Imagine the uproar if they said this now pic.twitter.com/23AjisZSjz- 🥃Russell (@RussellHayward) January 10, 2019
After singing a lovely version of Mariah Carey's 'Hero', Louis told her with a straight face: "You should have gone on your honeymoon. There's nothing special."
And revealing how Simon got his Mr Nasty nickname in the first place, he said: "You sound nice, but you look like a shop girl."
Keeping positive, Samantha said it was something that could be worked on, only to be cut down again with Simon continuing: "Well, it's a lot of work."
"I know what you're saying, that I'm overweight basically," the newlywed went on, with Simon saying: "You are. You really are."
Hahaha you could not get away with saying that now!- Adam 🦖 (@ChanceTay) January 11, 2019
I’m not excusing it (there’s even worse if you watch Simon’s world idol comments from 2003) but back then the industry honestly was like that. Adele wouldn’t have stood a chance of making it even with her amazing voice.- HooDooMan (@Jack43693489) January 11, 2019
I’m invested now. Where is she? What happened to her? Is she still married? pic.twitter.com/PO4cAZ4l4d- 💫𝕃𝕒𝕦𝕣𝕒 💫 (@laurar087) January 10, 2019
Louis opted not to send Samantha through to the next round, calling her "mission impossible".
Sharon seemed to be a bit more upbeat, telling Louis off for his phrase before saying: "Nothing is impossible. I think you have a lovely face and lovely voice.
"Missus, go on a diet and we'll see you at the next round."
