Woman aged 106 is 'Britain's oldest survivor of coronavirus'

A woman aged 106 is believed to be the oldest Briton to have survived coronavirus.

Connie Titchen has been discharged from Birmingham’s City Hospital after beating the deadly respiratory illness caused by the virus, which older people are more at risk of developing complications from.

The great-grandmother from Birmingham, who lived through both world wars, was given a clean bill of health after having the virus for three weeks.

She said: “I feel very lucky that I’ve fought off this virus. I can’t wait to see my family.”

Granddaughter Alex Jones said Titchen has enjoyed an active life and enjoys cycling, dancing and playing golf.

“She has always cooked for herself too, although she likes a cheeky McDonald’s every now and then. I haven’t told her they are closed.

“I think the secret of her old age is that she is physically active and very independent.

“She had a hip operation back in December and within 30 days she was walking again. She really is amazing and I know all the family can’t wait to see her. She has quite a few fans.”

Jones said the hospital’s care had been “brilliant”.

Titchen was admitted to City Hospital in March with suspected pneumonia and was diagnosed with coronavirus.

Sister Kelly Smith, who looked after the great grandmother-of-eight, said: “It’s been fantastic to see Connie recover. She is amazing and we’ve been doing our best to nurse her back to health.

“We were really pleased when she was given the all-clear. It’s nice to see patients leave our ward after having beaten this virus.”

As of 5pm on Tuesday, 12,868 people have died in UK hospitals after testing positive for coronavirus.

A 107-year-old woman in the Netherlands is thought to be the oldest coronavirus survivor in the world.

Cornelia Ras fell ill on the day after her 107th birthday in March, according to the Metro, after attending a church service with other residents in her care home.
