Oleksandr Usyk's team have hinted that a blockbuster heavyweight undisputed showdown with Tyson Fury could happen next.

The prospect of Usyk and Fury meeting for all the belts next has generally been dismissed, with Anthony Joshua having long since activated his clause for a rematch against the unified Ukrainian after losing his WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO belts for the second time in stunning fashion in September.

That second bout is expected to take place in the UK in April, with Joshua having rejected talk of potentially stepping aside for big money to allow Usyk to battle Fury instead.

WBC champion Fury, meanwhile, has been ordered to fight mandatory challenger Dillian Whyte after his explosive trilogy bout with Deontay Wilder, though a legal dispute between Whyte and the WBC has led to suggestions that Fury could face the likes of Andy Ruiz Jr or Robert Helenius instead in a non-title contest early this year.

However, Usyk's assistant coach Sergey Lapin has now cryptically hinted that a meeting between the former cruiserweight king and Fury could be on the cards next after all.

“In the near future we will find out the date of the Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua rematch. But maybe we'll find out something else interesting," he told MyBettingSites.

”Why not assume such an option as Fury-Usyk? It would be very interesting for boxing fans, a historical event. If you remember a year ago, fans were waiting for a fight for the undisputed world champion in the heavyweight division between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua - but literally in a moment, everything changed.

“At this stage, I think everything is possible, everything is constantly changing. The battle for undisputed champion in the heavyweight division is a very cool event that has not been held for more than 20 years.

“If this fight between my fighter Usyk and Tyson Fury took place, it would really be a confrontation between two guys with high boxing IQ. It seems to me the fight would be more like a chess game, and victory will be in the hands of the one who will perform his task as productively as possible.

“To date, there is no exact information about this fight, but recently I noticed that there is a lot of talk about it. Perhaps we will find out something interesting very soon. Maybe it's the UK and maybe it's Saudi Arabia.”

Lapin also unsurprisingly backed Usyk to get the better of Fury if the duo do eventually meet.. as long as he copes with what he described as his rival's "dirty” tactics.

"Oleksandr is ready for any challenges, especially if he may have the opportunity to combine all the belts in heavyweight. His advantage over other heavyweight boxers is the ability to box, and it's worth a lot!” he said.

"Boxing is an art, and representatives of different styles arrange cool fights!

"Fury's style can be very dirty, if Alex Usyk copes with Fury's dirty style, then victory will be his!"

Meanwhile, Fury promised on Thursday that there was "big news coming" as he later teased the possibility of a crossover boxing fight with reigning UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou.

"Who would like to see me fight this beast boxing rules @ufc gloves?" Fury tweeted along with a mock-up fight poster.
