The daughter of an oligarch has been detained in Ukraine after allegedly running a red light and mounting the pavement in a high-powered 4x4 vehicle, killing several pedestrians in a horrific crash.

At least five people including a teenage girl died in the crash in the city of Kharkiv when the black Lexus ploughed into pedestrians before flipping onto its side.

A heavily pregnant woman was said to be fighting for her life in hospital.

Horrific pictures of the aftermath of the collision show injured people and bodies strewn across the pavement, with the smashed up vehicle nearby.

Witnesses said the driver, alleged to be be Alyona Zaitseva, the 20-year-old daughter of an oligarch, had to be protected by her private security detail from an angry mob who surrounded her.

Zaitseva, daughter of energy company multi-millionaire Vasily Zaitsev, was reportedly detained at the scene and held for three days by authorities.

She is said to have been driving the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Some news outlets reported up to six dead, including a 15-year-old girl, with several more injured.

Three of the dead were named as Elena Berchenko, 25, Yury Neudachin, 24, Oksana Nesterenko, 36

Ms Zaitseva was uninjured.

A statement from the Interior Ministry said a driver has been detained and is being investigated for traffic safety violations.

That suggests Ukrainian officials did not suspect the vehicle targeted the pedestrians as part of an extremist plot.
