The 2020 Golden Globes nominations are in and despite mixed reviews for season 3, leading cast members of The Crown have all earned nominations.
The Crown's Olivia Colman, Tobias Menzies and Helena Bonham Carter are individually nominated for their performances as Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip and Princess Margaret.
Season 3 is the first in which Colman, Menzies and Bonham-Carter replaced the original cast members of Claire Foy, Matt Smith and Vanessa Kirby.
Claire Foy took home the Globe for Best Performance by an Actress In A Television Series - Drama in 2017 though lost out the following year to Elisabeth Moss in the Hulu series The Handmaid’s Tale.
Smith and Kirby, whose portrayals on The Crown were equally praised by fans, never received nominations for their work in Seasons 1 and 2. Other fans questioned why younger members of the cast, including Josh O'Connor, who plays Prince Charles, were missed from the nominees list.
In addition to nominations for Best Actress, Best Actor and Best Actress in a Supporting Role, The Crown is also up for Best Television Series - Drama, which it previously won in 2017 and was also nominated for in 2018
The Golden Globes award show is set to air on January 5, and Season 4 of The Crown is set to be released later in the year. Filming for the upcoming season has already begun, with Colman and Bonham Carter confirmed to be reprising their roles as Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret.
The newest season will also see actress Emma Corrin introduced as Princess Diana and actor Josh O’Connor returning as Prince Charles.
