Olly Murs's return to the stage after undergoing knee surgery didn't go to plan when he was left rubbing his eyes after a sun cream mishap.

During the gig at Newbury Racecourse on Saturday, a fan threw a bottle of sun cream at the stage, which left Murs in pain 24 hours later.

Fans on social media revealed that Murs had tried to apply the sun cream during the performance, only for it to run into his eyes when it mixed with his sweat.

"What a crowd and thanks for the sun cream," Murs tweeted. "My bloody eyes are still stinging."

The former X Factor contestant and presenter then responded with a series of laughing emojis to a picture which seems to show him suffering in the wake of the incident.

Murs made his return to the stage just 11 days after undergoing surgery on his leg, required when a fragment of bone lodged in the back of his knee leaving him unable to walk.

The star had previous knee surgery to repair potentially serious ligament damage in 2019.

In the wake of his latest surgery, he had teased that the Newbury performance would be "a different gig" due to his recovery.

"I probably won’t be running around like I normally do," Murs added. "There might be a stool for me to sit down on, but I can’t cancel these gigs for you guys.”

Murs rose to fame on The X Factor in 2009 and then embarked on a career which has seen him sell more than 10 million records worldwide.

He has secured four number one singles in the UK, including Troublemaker and his debut hit Please Don't Let Me Go.

As well as his music career, he has worked as a presenter on The X Factor and more recently as a coach on The Voice.

His sixth studio album, entitled You Know I Know, was released in 2018 and peaked at number two on the UK Albums Chart.
