There aren't many Essex boys who can now claim to be Janners, but pop singer Olly Murs is apparently one of them.

The musician, who rose to prominence after becoming a runner up in the sixth series of the popular talent show The X Factor in 2009, has gone on to have a successful music career with many Number 1 songs, including 'Please Don't Let Me Go', 'Heart Skips a Beat', 'Dance with Me Tonight' and 'Troublemaker'.

Last year he married his long time girlfriend, Plymouth bodybuilder and model Amelia Tank. In 2019 Plymouth Live reported how the former Plymouth High School for Girls pupil grew up in the city before moving to London to compete internationally in body building competitions.

In 2018 she finished first in the Bikini Tall and Miss Model category at the Miami Pro World Championships, then won the Bikini Babe Tall Class at the Pure Elite competition.

Speaking to BBC Radio, Olly revealed he was now considered an honorary Janner - the term used for a person from Plymouth.

He said: "I'm a Janner now, that's what they tell me, yeah. It's my second home, honestly. It really is. Essex will always be my first, but now that Amelia, my wife, is [from Plymouth] and I love Plymouth so much, it's such a beautiful place."

Olly's latest 16-date tour will open in Plymouth with Blue as special guests.

He told the BBC: "I'm opening in Plymouth - I can't believe it, it's going to be awesome. So many people asked me 'why Plymouth?' Obviously I have to reiterate to them that Amelia, my wife, is from Plymouth. On my last tour I ended it there [Plymouth]. It was so special so I just said to Amelia I'm going to open it [here] this time, we're going to start there."

Olly joked: "My mother-in-law has put in a request for about 40 people! No - it's going to be brilliant. It's so special to do it there. I'll be able to take my baby there, Madison - she'll be one [by] then.

"I've got so many special memories down there [in Plymouth]. I was only just down there recently at Drake Circus, the town centre. I drove all the way there - it was a five hour journey from Essex to Plymouth. I had the baby with us, so we're stopping and starting and we were there for a wedding and I'd left my suitcase for the wedding in Essex!

"I was fuming and stressed out and I'd been driving for five and a half hours - so I just drove down to Plymouth town centre, went to Drake Circus and was stomping around there for two hours trying to find some clothes and an outfit for the weekend."

He said while he was angry with himself, his wife Amelia was laughing at the situation.

He added: "Maybe this is a dad thing, maybe the dads can relate to me but I'm packing the car and I'm worried about Amelia, I'm worried about what she's got, has she got everything, worried about the baby, have we got the baby bag, have we got the travel cot, we've got this, we've got that, the baby's crying...

"I managed to pack all the important people and all the important things in the car and obviously the one thing that was important to me was my suitcase which wasn't with me!"

Olly said he "loved" being down in Devon and Cornwall saying "it's beautiful down there".

He said: "We really enjoy being part of it now and a lot of our holidays are down in Cornwall. I'm hoping to do more gigs down that way."

He said he had good links with the South West, not just with his marriage to a Plymouth girl, but also knowing St Ives singer Molly Hocking who won the eighth series of The Voice in 2019 after joining Olly's team.

He said: "Molly's someone I always watch on Instagram to check on how she's getting on. She works so, so hard - she's got such a great voice and she's such a great singer. That time on The Voice, winning it for the first time with Molly, was really special.

"Next year - 2025 - is 15 years in music. Couldn't believe it - genuinely shocked. A guy that started in a call centre, giving people advice on how to save money on their energy bills has managed to carve out an incredible career in music and in TV."

He revealed that along with Blue as his support act he hoped to perform brand new music for the show.

He said: "I'm just in the process of all that and I'm hoping by the tour next year there will be some new tunes."

Olly will be performing at the Plymouth Pavilions on April 24, 2025
