Ominous Cloud Formation Swirls Above Northwest Texas

A menacing supercell storm drew the attention of stormchasers, meteorologists, and residents in Lubbock, Texas, on Monday evening, May 17, as the National Weather Service (NWS) issued tornado warnings and urged people to seek shelter immediately.

Josue Hernandez recorded video showing the spectacular swirling motions of the supercell, writing, “Mother Nature is undefeated” in a Twitter post.

A tornado warning was issued for Lubbock at around 7:40 pm, and remained in effect until 9:55 pm. Minutes after the warning was issued, the NWS reported that a funnel cloud had been spotted followed by torrential rain and hail “the size of golf balls”. Credit: Josue Hernandez via Storyful
