On This Day: Henry Lindfield becomes first British motorist to be killed in a car crash

Mr Lindfield, a businessman, was driving from Brighton to London with son when he lost control of his car and crashed into a tree.

February 12 1898: It was well over a century ago on this day that Henry Lindfield became the first British motorist to be killed in a car crash.

Mr Lindfield, a businessman, was driving from Brighton to London with son when he lost control of his car and crashed into a tree.

The pair had crashed through a fence, Mr Lindfield was thrown from the driver's seat before he caught his leg between the car and the tree.

Mr Lindfield's son was not hurt and ran for help.

Surgeons found Mr Lindfield's leg was crushed below the knee and decided to amputate. However, he did not regain consciousness after the operation and died the following day at Croydon Hospital.
