APR 5, 1994: The music world lost a true icon on this day 19 years ago when Kurt Cobain committed suicide.

The Nirvana frontman was found dead inside his home in Seattle, Washington, having ingested valium and heroin before writing a suicide note which said it's 'better to burn out than to fade away'.

On This Day: Martin Luther King assassinated

Cobain, who died aged 27, was not found until three days after his death, on April 8, 1994.

An incident report by the Seattle Police Department noted that he had a shotgun across his body and a visible head wound, while the King County Medical Examiner noted he had puncture wounds on the inside of both elbows.

Cobain's downward spiral began the month before his death. He went into a coma and only narrowly survived after mixing champagne and Rohypnol.

He made repeated threats to kill himself, and was admitted to rehab in LA at the end of March 1994, but walked away soon after without informing friends or family.

Days later he was found dead with an official ruling of suicide, although several films and books since have given different explanations for his death.
