Once regarded "a genius", Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho now looks "outdated" and "rattled", according to former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton.

Mourinho's team sit second in the Premier League and booked their place in the FA Cup semi-finals with victory over Brighton on Saturday.

But their lacklustre Champions League exit to Sevilla earlier in March heaped more pressure on the former Chelsea manager.

After a creditable 0-0 draw away, Mourinho's side were beaten 2-1 at home by the Spanish side and while their League position may be encouraging, United are 16 points behind leaders City.

A defiant Mourinho launched a passionate, 12-minute defence of his side ahead of Brighton's visit, but his public criticism of Luke Shaw after the win over Chris Hughton's men drew further criticism.

"Mourinho is a changed personality from the charismatic one that first came over in 2004. He is picking silly, personal squabbles," Sutton told the BBC.

"Is it disastrous for Manchester United at the moment? No.

"But is this what Mourinho's remit was, to come in and finish behind City and not push for major trophies? He is rattled.

"He looks across the city, and the style of football they and Liverpool play. This is a guy who first came on to the scene and was regarded as a genius. Now he is looking outdated in the way his team plays and the way other teams play."
