Warning: This article contains spoilers for Once Upon a Time season 7, episode 2 'A Pirate's Life', so go catch up now and come back late if you don't want to spoil it.

Friday's episode (October 13) of Once Upon A Time revealed the Hook we know and love is gone and enjoying his happily ever after with Emma (Jennifer Morrison), meaning the Hyperion Heights Hook we were introduced to last week is a different version of the character.

Yes, it's a little confusing, but the good news is fans do get to hold on to those season six happy endings as promised.

Once Upon a Time's second episode of the soft reboot revealed that the version of Colin O'Donoghue's character we were introduced to last week is actually the drunken Wish Realm version of Hook we first met last season.

Through flashbacks, it was revealed that when Henry (Andrew J West) called upon his family for help in the Enchanted Forest, Emma, Regina (Lana Parrilla), and Hook answered the call - but so did Wish Hook as part of a plan to win Emma's heart and heal his poisoned heart.

Ultimately, Wish Hook discovered Emma (Jennifer Morrison) was pregnant so he let her and Hook-Prime return to Storybrooke to get their happy ending, while Wish Hook and Regina stayed to help Henry on his new journey, which explains how Hook gets to stay on the show despite Emma's departure.

Speaking of the twist to EW, O'Donoghue explained how he was really happy with the development.

"It had been such a long journey for those two characters, and such a difficult journey that I was glad to see that, in the end, they get their happy ending, because that was the whole point of the musical episode, and the big number with a happy beginning right before the Black Fairy's curse hit," he said.

"For me, I think it was the right way to go for those two characters."

He also revealed that he'd known about the Wish Hook changeover early on the planning process, calling it a "clever way" of moving on.

"I had spoken to Eddy [Kitsis] and Adam [Horowitz] about that," he said. "Also, because Wish Hook - not the younger version of Wish Hook, but the older version of Wish Hook - was one of my favourite versions of him to play, so it was exciting to get to do that.

"It's a very clever way of making sure the Captain Swan fans - fans of Hook and Emma - get their happy ending after going on such a big journey with them for the last few seasons. I think it's a clever way of us being able to move on with a new version of Hook."

Now Wish Hook is on a mission to find his missing daughter who has been locked away by an evil witch.

"I guess it's similar to original Hook where he was motivated by love for Milah, everything that Wish Hook does is motivated out of love for his daughter," he teased.

"It's been fascinating to try and explore how to make Wish Hook the same as the other version of Hook that I played."

Once Upon A Time continues on Friday (October 20) on ABC. Netflix airs the show in the UK.
