Being married to more than one person seems to be something that some Brits would very much be interested in.

In fact, some 12% of men say they would have more than one wife if it was legal in this country, according to polling company YouGov.

The figure is three times the amount of women (4%) who say they would like at least one other husband.

Polygamous marriages do not just confine someone to two partners and while 5% of men and 2% of women would like two married partners, the same amount in both cases would opt for three.

When it comes to four or more married partners, just 2% of men would be interested while a statistical 0% of women would want that many.

Despite the figures, monogamy – being married to just the one person – is still by far the most popular option for most people.

Some 60% of women and 53% of men would stick with the one married partner if polygamy ever became legal in Britain.

But not everyone is interested in getting married – a quarter of women say they wouldn’t want to get married, compared to 17% of men.

YouGov conducted the survey of 2316 UK adults after Canadian fundamentalist Mormon Winston Blackmore was found to be married to 24 women, while his former brother-in-law, James Olner, was married to five.
