One dead, others seriously hurt in Sullivan County crash

Mar. 25—One person died and several were seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash about 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Old Indiana 54 and County Road 400 West in Sullivan County.

Dead is Mary Beth Olson, 82, according to the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office.

Early investigation shows a GM sport-utility vehicle was southbound on County Road 400 West and had stopped for the stop sign before pulling into the path of an eastbound Chevrolet car, which had the right of way, the sheriff's office said.

There were five people in the SUV, which was driven by Julie Libke of Sullivan. All sustained serious injuries. One of those passengers was Olson, who is Libke's mother-in-law. Olson was flown to Indianapolis with internal injuries and died from her injuries, the sheriff said.

Libke's granddaughter also was flown to Indianapolis with internal injuries. All other occupants were transported to local hospitals.

The Chevrolet car was driven by by Alec Tatom of Sullivan. Tatom was not seriously injured, however his passenger, Alexa Pearson, sustained serious injuries and was flown to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

An Indiana State Police crash reconstruction team helped deputies investigate. It was reported glare from the setting sun may have contributed to the accident, police said.

There were no indications of drugs or alcohol being involved in the crash, the sheriff's office said.

In addition to ISP, assisting agencies in included Sullivan County Ambulance, Carlisle Ambulance, Knox County Ambulance, Greene County Ambulance, Air Evac helicopter, Lifeline helicopter, Haddon Township Fire Department, Gill Township Fire Department, Sullivan City Fire and Ambulance and Sullivan City Police Department.
