One dead and several seriously injured in M6 crash involving two lorries and three cars
One person has died and several people are seriously injured after two lorries and three cars were involved in a motorway horror smash.
Lancashire Police said a lorry travelling northbound between Preston and Lancaster crossed onto the southbound carriageway of the M6 and collided with a number of other vehicles. An air ambulance and several road ambulances rushed to the scene. Firefighters have also been involved in the operation.
A police spokesman added: "Very sadly the collision has resulted in one fatality and a number of other serious injuries. Our thoughts are with all those affected at this time.

"Emergency services remain at the scene and the motorway remains closed in both directions between junctions 32 and 33 while we continue to deal with the incident. The closure is likely to stay in place for some considerable time so please check before you travel as diversions are in place."
A fuel spillage has added to problems for police investigating the smash - as work takes place to clean up the petrol and make the carriageways safe. Both sides of the motorway will be shut overnight, National Highways say, with diversions in place.
A National Highways spokesman said: "Motorists are advised to plan their journeys and expect significant delays this evening and tonight with a section of the M6 remaining closed in both directions until tomorrow morning following a serious collision.
"This morning's incident involved two heavy goods vehicles and three other vehicles, with one HGV travelling northbound crossing over onto the southbound carriageway. All emergency services attended including an Air Ambulance.
"Damage was caused to the central reservation barrier due to the collision. The fire service removed a further part of the central reservation to release trapped traffic. There has also been a fuel spillage across the carriageway which requires cleaning.
"Police investigations continue at the scene with the M6 to remain closed overnight between Junction 33 (Lancaster) and Junction 32 (Preston)."
