One dies after being injured in Jan. 14 crash

Troopers with the Virginia State Police are investigating a one-vehicle fatal crash that occurred Jan. 14 at 12:19 a.m. on Route 460 in Tazewell County.

A 2014 TC Scion was heading westbound on Route 460 near Mayflower Rd. (Route 804) when it went off the road to the left, struck a guardrail, then crossed Route 460 and struck an embankment, according to Matthew Demlein, public relations manager for the state police.

A passenger in the backseat of the Scion, Allen M. Smith, 20, of Richlands, Va., was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected. He died of his injuries on Feb. 2.

A second backseat passenger, a 16-year-old male, was seriously injured. He was wearing a seatbelt.

A third passenger was not injured.

The driver of the vehicle, Michael S. Meadows, 29, of Cedar Bluff, Va., suffered minor injuries. He has been charged with driving under the influence.

The crash remains under investigation.
