The crash on the southbound carriageway between junctions 17 and 16 involved two lorries, five cars and two vans.

A spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said five people had to be cut from the wreckage.

The person who died was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cheshire Constabulary said two people suffered life-threatening injuries and another was seriously hurt.

The casualties were taken to hospitals in Leighton, Crewe and Stoke for treatment.
