One Killed And Three Hurt In College Shooting

An 18-year-old college freshman has been arrested after one person was killed and three others wounded in a shooting at a university in northern Arizona.

Steven Jones is due to appear in court later on charges of first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated assault.

Police said Jones opened fire on the campus of Northern Arizona University at about 1.20am after a group of students became involved in a confrontation.

Justin Sherman, the executive director of Delta Chi, said all four victims were members of the fraternity. He said Jones was not a member.

Authorities identified the student who died as Colin Brough, of Colorado.

The three wounded victims are Nicholas Prato, Kyle Zientek and Nicholas Piring. An update on their conditions was not immediately made available.

Jones was arrested without incident by the first officer to arrive on the Flagstaff campus, university police chief GT Fowler told a news conference.

He could not confirm reports that the shooter had been subdued by other students.

Officers recovered a handgun at the scene, Chief Fowler said.

The shooting took place in a car park near Mountain View Hall, a dormitory which houses the university's fraternities and sororities.

The college campus, which has around 25,000 students, was not placed on lockdown.

The university called the shooting an "isolated and unprecedented" incident.

Classes were scheduled to go on as planned on Friday, university President Rita Cheng said.

Carrying guns on the school's campus is prohibited, Chief Fowler said. But student who legally own guns are permitted to keep them locked inside their vehicles.
