One-year-old boy seriously injured in fall from Birmingham flat

A one-year-old boy has sustained a serious head injury after falling from the window of a second floor flat in Birmingham.

West Midlands police were investigating how the child came to fall from the Vineyard, a YMCA-owned housing scheme in Erdington at about 7.30pm on Friday.

A West Midlands police spokesman said: “The one-year-old child was taken to hospital with a serious head injury, where he remains today, as inquiries continue into how he came about his injuries.”

The YMCA said it was working with officers and would carry out its own internal investigation so it could fully understand what had happened.

“Staff from the YMCA scheme next door attended the scene within minutes and offered our support to the family and everyone involved,” a spokesman said. '“Our heart goes out to the little boy’s family and our thoughts and prayers are with them.”

The Vineyard opened in May 2016 and meets or exceeds all relevant safety standards, the YMCA said. “YMCA Heart of England takes health and safety extremely seriously and our residents’ safety and welfare is central to everything we do.

“We will continue to offer support to the little boy’s family and to our staff and other residents who have been affected by this.”
