One person taken to hospital as car hit tree in serious collision on A19 near Sunderland
One person has been taken to hospital following a car hitting a tree in a serious collision on the A19 near Sunderland.
The single-vehicle collision happened shortly before 5pm this evening, between the A183 (Pennywell) and A1231 (Hylton) near Sunderland.
The road was closed northbound for around three hours, but has since reopened. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, National Highways North East said: "Recovery and clear-up work is complete and the A19 northbound is OPEN between A183 and A1231 near Sunderland. No significant delays on approach, safe travels this evening."

In a statement, a spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service said: "We received a call at 4.58pm to reports of a road traffic incident on the A19 at the junction of Fairmead Way in Sunderland. We sent one ambulance and took one patient to Sunderland Royal Infirmary."
Northumbria Police have also been contacted for comment.
