Skincare experts have urged people not to be fooled by the lack of sunshine and warm weather during the winter months - emphasising the importance of taking care of your skin all year round.

Using example images in a TikTok video Dermatologists at DERMDOC UK suggest wearing sunscreen all year round to avoid developing skin that appears wrinkly, red and blotched. "Sunscreen is essential in winter because UV rays can still damage your skin even on cloudy or snowy days," their clip warns. "Refection of the snow intensifies the UV exposure, increasing the risk of skin damage

Last month it was reported that skin cancer rates have reached record highs, with melanoma cases in the UK projected to exceed 20,800 in 2024. With that in mind, a doctor has also urged the public to adopt year-round sun protection, as winter sun exposure presents "unique dangers".

Reiterating the points made by DERMDOC UK, Dr Emily Alfonsi, medical director at Shade Skin Skin Cancer Clinic, said: "Many people underestimate the strength of UV rays during the colder months, but winter sun can still cause significant skin damage. Whether you’re skiing in the mountains or taking a frosty morning walk in the UK, UV rays remain a threat."

Even on overcast days, up to 80% of UV rays penetrate clouds, making daily sun protection essential. Dr Alfonsi advises incorporating a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30 into your daily skincare routine, regardless of the season.

"UV rays don’t take a holiday," explained Dr Alfonsi. "Wearing SPF is just as important on a crisp winter day as it is on a hot summer afternoon." She continued: "Sun protection isn’t seasonal - it’s a lifestyle. Whether it’s sunny, snowy, or cloudy, your skin deserves daily care. With melanoma cases rapidly increasing, experts stress that small, consistent habits can save lives. A simple step like wearing SPF every day can significantly reduce your risk of skin cancer."

The NHS shares this approach, cautioning online: "Sun protection is also important in the winter. Snow reflects up to 80% of the sun's rays, causing sunburn and damage to uncovered skin. Winter sports in the mountains increase the risk of sunburn because there is less atmosphere at high altitudes to block the sun's rays."
