A woman was raped by a drunk man in broad daylight as passersby watched and filmed instead of helping her.

Dozens reportedly filmed the attack in Visakhapatnam, India.

Police said the accused, identified as Ganji Siva, was arrested after an auto-rickshaw driver sent them a video of the crime.

The 23-year-old was produced before the court on Monday and sent to two weeks of judicial remand.

His alleged victim, 43, had left her house two days before the attack after a family argument and had not eaten for the last few days and lacked the energy to resist the attack or scream for help.

“Apparently, she was very weak as she had not eaten for several hours and was sleeping on the footpath under the shadow of a tree, when Siva, in an inebriated condition assaulted her sexually,” K Suresh, police sub-inspector for Visakhapatnam IV town, told the Hindustan Times.

Mr Suresh said the auto-rickshaw driver's video showed passersby walking past and not helping the woman.

"Instead, some of them were more interested in capturing the incident on their mobile phones," he said.

"It clearly shows how the people have become insensitive to attacks on women."

The victim was sent to a local hospital for a medical examination.
