Only four per cent of pub-goers will visit their local when lockdown restrictions are eased tomorrow, new research has found.

Pubs and restaurants in England are preparing for hoards of Brits to flock through their doors as the Government's lockdown measures are relaxed for the hospitality sector.

But a new YouGov poll shows that only a small per cent of people who visited pubs before lockdown will return on "Super Saturday".

When surveying 1,618 people between July 1 and July 2, one in 10 said they never plan to go to the pub again.

Most British pub lovers (53 per cent) plan to wait it out until the second half of the year, the research found.

Adults under the age of 24 are the most keen to return this weekend (11 per cent) while older adults aged 50 to 64 (55 per cent) and over 65 (57 per cent) say they prefer to wait until later this year.

Breaking the data down by gender shows that 6 per cent of men who visited the pub before lockdown plan to buy a pint on the first day back, with a further 5 per cent wanting to visit in the first week.

A fifth will visit their local sometime in July (22 per cent). Seven per cent of women want to visit either tomorrow (3 per cent) or in the first week (4 per cent), with the majority preferring to wait until later in the year (55 per cent).

It has been suggested that one way of protecting customers and staff from Covid-19 is for venues to keep a log of visitors, including their contact details.

This is so that if a patron later tests positive for coronavirus the other customers can be contact-traced.

YouGov data shows that two-thirds of Brits are happy to supply their details (63 per cent).

Three in 10 are very comfortable to do so but 30 per cent said they would be uncomfortable giving their details to staff.

Commenting on the research, Connor Ibbetson, Research Manager at YouGov said: “New YouGov data shows that there will be clear groups of people that are comfortable being the first through the door as pubs reopen tomorrow for "Super Saturday".

"Men and young adults are much more likely to be first in the queue while women and the elderly appear more hesitant.

“While there have been discussions as to whether patrons would comply with providing contact details to landlords for potential contact tracing, our research shows that on the whole pub visitors are happy to provide this in order to be able to visit their locals again.”
