Oprah “1,000 Percent” Backs the Sussexes' Decision to Step Down

From Harper's BAZAAR

Oprah Winfrey is “1,000 percent” behind the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

While walking around New York City on Tuesday night, friends Winfrey and Gayle King were asked by TMZ about their thoughts on Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan’s decision to step down as senior members of the royal family and subsequently move to Canada.

“I support them 1,000 percent,” said the billionaire and longtime Sussexes ally, who also previously denied advising the royal couple on their decision.

“You know why I support them?” she continued. “I support them because I believe that when you have thought about this as long as they have—and even in the queen’s statement, everyone take note where the queen says, ‘This has been going on for months, these discussions have been going on for months’—so when you’ve thought about it for months, and when Harry said … that he had to make the decision … in order to move forward in peace with his new family … but who doesn’t feel that? Who doesn’t feel what that takes to make that decision to give up everything you’ve known in your whole life to say I’m going to choose this new life or what I believe to be the truest vision for myself. Who are any of us to stand in judgment of that?”

She also shot down critics of Harry and Meghan. “I don’t think anybody else has any right to say anything,” she said. “When a person has sat and thought about, ‘What is the best decision to make for my family?’ and then he makes that decision, none of us have any right to say anything about that.”

King also chimed in, continuing to defend Harry and Meghan from critics who have lambasted the Sussexes for supposedly “blindsiding” the royal family with their announcement.

“They didn’t make the decision in a vacuum,” King said. “There were a lot of conversations. That’s why I thought it was very unfair to say that the queen was blindsided. Even the queen’s own statement said these conversations have been going on for months.”

Many critics were quick to accuse Harry and Meghan of disrespecting and surprising Queen Elizabeth with their announcement. While it was reported that nobody in the royal family knew of the timing of their announcement, the queen's official statement said that the final decision followed “many months of conversations and more recent discussions,” implying that the Sussexes’ move was a long time in the making.
