Note: This article contains spoilers for Orange Is the New Black season 7.

Orange Is the New Black delivered an emotional and satisfying final season, but the ending could have been different.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, creator Jenji Kohan revealed that she thought about a 'meta' conclusion to Piper Chapman's (Taylor Schilling) storyline. Piper is based on Piper Kerman, whose memoir Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison inspired the TV series.

Kohan considered the possibility of having Piper in the TV show pitch to a fictional version of the Orange Is the New Black creator a TV series based on her life in prison.

"I mentioned it to my 13-year-old over dinner, and he's like, 'No you can't end the show like that!'," Kohan said.

Executive producer Tara Herrmann added: "It would have taken away from the grounded and important show that we wanted to make."

Herrmann also discussed the decision to kill Pennsatucky (Taryn Manning) towards the end of the final season. The inmate died by overdose after assuming that she failed her GED exam.

"It's hard to kill anyone," Herrmann said. "We don't like a body count on this show, and especially not for a character that you've grown to love and who we've taken on such a journey.

"There was such deep trauma and addiction and abuse, and we know where those stories go, sadly. Or, at least the majority of [those] in prison don't end well."

Orange Is the New Black's final season is available to watch on Netflix.
