New episodes of Orange Is the Black have been leaked online, months before they were due to premiere on Netflix.

A hacker, who calls themself "thedarkoverlord", held ten episodes of season five to ransom – but Netflix refused to pay, according to Variety.

"We are aware of the situation. A production vendor used by several major TV studios had its security compromised and the appropriate law enforcement authorities are involved," Netflix said in a statement on Friday.

The hacker also obtained episodes from TV shows belonging to ABC, Fox, National Geographic, and IFC.

However, it failed to take the final three episodes of Orange Is the New Black's 13-episode fifth season.

In a message posted on Saturday, the hacker said it was "quite ashamed to breath the same air" as Netflix, expressing disappointment that the streaming platform did not pay up.

"It didn't have to be this way, Netflix," it wrote. "You're going to lose a lot more money in all of this than what our modest offer was.

"We figured a pragmatic business such as yourselves would see and understand the benefits of cooperating with a reasonable and merciful entity like ourselves."

The whole of Orange Is the New Black's fifth season will be officially released on Friday, June 9.

It will take place across just three days and pick up directly after the Litchfield inmates took over the prison last season.

The tragic death of Poussey (Samira Wiley) and the subsequent cover-up by Joe Caputo (Nick Sandow) left the prisoners devastated, enraged, and thirsty for justice, as Taystee (Danielle Brooks) was seen in the final few minutes of season four leading the charge.

Daya (Dascha Polanco) ended up with a gun in her hands, and – in front of a crowd of her fellow inmates – aimed it at corrections officer Thomas Humphrey's head.
