Orford girl praised by residents as she clears streets of litter on way to school
ONE young determined girl has begun to clear the streets of Orford near her home on her journey to school each day.
Five-year-old Violet Smith was fed up of seeing the mounds of litter that consistently tarnished her neighbourhood and took action.
She now uses a litter picker daily and fills bin bags of rubbish on her commute to Beamont Primary School.
Mother Amy Smith explained, “She asked for a litter picker so she could help ‘save our world’.
“She litter picks where we live, it’s very messy, full of rubbish dumped down the backs of O’Leary street where she plays with her friends.”

The litter issue in the area stretches to more than just a few food wrappers, with Amy and Violet noticing ‘filthy mattresses’ and ‘larger furniture’ being dumped in the back of the streets where young children wish to play.
When Violet carries out her daily good deed, passers-by notice and ‘toot their horn’ in support for her mission.
Others have thanked and praised her in admiration for her impressive initiative to help solve the litter problem in Orford – with one individual even handing her a £10 note.
Amy added: “It’s nice to know that people appreciate what she’s doing, but on the other hand it’s disheartening to see her clean up the mess and then the following week it happens again and again.
“I’m extremely proud of her, she’s strong minded and wants to make where we live nice and clean.”
