The Original Freddy Krueger is returning on TV

From Digital Spy

Freddy Krueger is coming back to terrify audiences once again, as actor Robert Englund is reprising his iconic role from the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise in an upcoming episode of ABC's The Goldbergs.

Marking the first time that Englund has donned the black-and-red jumper on screen in 15 years, the actor is set to appear on the Halloween episode of The Goldbergs with the ABC sitcom teasing his presence in a new video on Twitter.

"#TheGoldbergs Halloween episode this year is going to be a NIGHTMARE! @RobertBEnglund will guest star as the one and only Freddy Krueger!" the account wrote.

In the clip, Beverly Goldberg (Wendi McLendon-Covey) introduces "Fredward" to audiences as the episode's guest star.

"He's just enchanting," she says. "Very well-mannered. We get our nails done at the same place."

And as for "Mr Krueger" himself, all he had to say was: "Trick or treat."

The Goldbergs' Halloween episode will be titled 'Nightmare on Elk Avenue', and focuses on teenager Adam's (Sean Giambrone) struggles with the terror he experiences after seeing the original film for the first time.

Englund created the role of villain Krueger in 1984's Nightmare on Elm Street, and as The Goldbergs is well known for its celebration of '80s culture, this is a genius cameo that, quite frankly, we can't quite believe didn't happen sooner.

The actor last featured as Krueger in 2003's Freddy vs Jason, making this the first appearance of Englund's version of the serial killer in 15 years – although he has appeared as the character at several conventions and photo opportunities since.

Last year, Englund said that he was "too old" to reprise the role again, explaining that the fight scenes take a lot of physical effort to film. Rest assured though as he also added that he "can still be mean and scary", so expect plenty of jump scares in The Goldbergs.

The Goldbergs returns to ABC in the US on September 26. The shows airs on E4 in the UK.
