Oscar Nominations: Strong Showing For Brits

Eddie Redmayne, Tom Hardy, Kate Winslet and Charlotte Rampling are among the British stars who have been nominated for an Oscar this year.

Redmayne goes head-to-head with The Revenant star Leonardo DiCaprio who won a Golden Globe for his performance on Sunday.

The Danish Girl star took home the Academy Award last year for his performance as Professor Stephen Hawking in The Theory Of Everything.

DiCaprio has been nominated for an Oscar five times now and many believe this year is his turn to walk away with the prize.

Bryan Cranston (Trumbo), Matt Damon (The Martian) and Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) are also named in the best actor category.

Rampling was recognised for her role in 45 Years in the best actress category but faces competition from Cate Blanchett (Carol), Brie Larson (Room), Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) and Jennifer Lawrence (Joy).

Ronan was previously nominated when she was just 13 for her role in Atonement in 2007.

Kate Winslet landed a nomination for best supporting actress for her role as Joanna Hoffman in Steve Jobs.

She was the surprise winner in the category at the Golden Globes and will be up against Blanchett's co-star Rooney Mara for Carol, as well as Redmayne's co-star, Alicia Vikander.

Spotlight actress Rachel McAdams and Jennifer Jason Leigh also landed nominations in the category.

British talent also dominated the best supporting actor category, with nods for Christian Bale in The Big Short, Tom Hardy in The Revenant and Mark Rylance in Bridge Of Spies.

They will compete with Sylvester Stallone for Creed and Mark Ruffalo for Spotlight.

There were no black actors nominated in any of the top categories, and the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite - used in the past to criticise the lack of diversity among the nominees - quickly trended on Twitter.

Financial drama The Big Short, espionage thriller Bridge Of Spies and revenge epic The Revenant will compete with Spotlight, Room, The Martian, Brooklyn and Mad Max: Fury Road for best picture.

The Revenant leads the way after being named in 12 categories but some will be surprised that Mad Max: Fury Road came second with 10 nominations.

Ridley Scott's sci-fi epic The Martian landed seven nominations, including best picture, but there was no best director nod for Scott.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens was nominated in a number of technical categories, including sound editing and visual mixing.

Sam Smith's song Writing's On The Wall from James Bond film Spectre has been nominated for best original song.

The nod for the British soul singer and his writing partner Jimmy Napes comes just days after they won a Golden Globe for the hit.

They will compete with singles including Lady Gaga's track Til It Happens To You from The Hunting Ground and The Weeknd's Earned It from Fifty Shades Of Grey.

Amy, the documentary about the life and death of British singer Amy Winehouse, was named in the documentary feature category.

There had been some hopes that Pixar's Inside Out would become the first animation to be shortlisted for best picture but it was not to be.

However, it was named in the best animated feature category, alongside the Bristol-made film Shaun The Sheep Movie.

The ceremony will take place on 28 February with Chris Rock hosting for a second time.
