Oscars 2016: Brand Awkwardly Mistakes Whoopi Goldberg For Oprah Winfrey

The Oscars can be a stressful night for all involved - especially if you commit a pretty epic Twitter fail in the process of covering the awards.

Yep, in an unfortunate incident, a beauty brand accidentally mixed up Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey while discussing the former’s shoulder tattoo on Twitter.

Sharing a photo of Whoopi looking gorgeous on the red carpet at the Oscars, the brand wrote: “We had no idea @Oprah was #tatted, and we love it. #Oscars”.

Oprah was not in attendance at this year’s awards.

The tweet has since been deleted, but not before fans managed to grab screenshots of the error.

Gayle King later shared this photo of Oprah reacting to the faux pas, writing: “@Oprah & favorite daughter watching #Oscars & seeing @totalbeautyeditors snafu! We all love @whoopigoldberg but we don’t all look alike Jeeeze! [sic]”

The timing of the mistake is particularly interesting (and terrible, obviously), as there has been a huge debate about diversity surrounding this year’s Oscars.

The #OscarsSoWhite campaign has been looking at and highlighting the lack of black and asian nominees at the 2016 awards, with some Hollywood stars deciding to boycott the show in protest.

Total Beauty have since apologised for their mistake, tweeting: “We’d like to apologize to Oprah and Whoopi, as well as everyone we’ve offended. It was our error, and there are no excuses. We’re sorry.”

They later added: “Using this #Oscars #SNAFU as an opportunity to donate $10k to @whoopigoldberg & @oprah’s charity of choice. #ThatsNotOprah #WeMeanIt.”
