Oscar nominations 2018: The Shape of Water leads the pack as Brits Gary Oldman and Daniel Kaluuya go head-to-head for Best Actor

British star Gary Oldman looks set to pick up his first Academy Award after bagging a Best Actor nomination ahead of this year’s ceremony.

Oldman - who has received a haul of awards for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour - will be pitted against fellow Brit Daniel Kaluuya for Get Out, Daniel Day-Lewis for Phantom Thread and Denzel Washington for Roman J Israel.

Nominations for the 90th Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday by Tiffany Haddish and Andy Serkis ahead of the ceremony on March 4, with Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water picking up 13 nominations including Best Director for del Toro and Best Actress for Sally Hawkins.

Unsurprisingly, Frances McDormand also received a nod for her powerful performance in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. The pair will be up against Margot Robbie for I, Tonya, Saoirse Ronan for Ladybird and Meryl Streep for The Post.

Directed by Martin McDonagh, Three Billboards has triumphed throughout awards season and will contend with Call Me by Your Name, Darkest Hour, Dunkirk, Get Out, Lady Bird, Phantom Thread, The Post and The Shape of Water for the prestigious Best Picture gong.

Best Supporting Actor saw Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell nominated for Three Billboards, as well as Christopher Plummer for All The Money in the World - a role he only shot late last year after Kevin Spacey was dropped. Other names in contention include Willem Dafoe for The Florida Project and Richard Jenkins for The Shape of Water.

Mudbound's Mary J. Blige, I, Tonya's Allison Janney, Phantom Thread's Leslie Manville, Lady Bird's Laurie Metcalfe and The Shape of Water's Octavia Spencer will all be hoping to take home the female equivalent.

Greta Gerwig has become the fifth woman in Academy Awards history to be nominated for Best Director for Lady Bird, while Rachel Morrison made history to become the first female nominee for Cinematography. She has been recognised for her work on Mudbound.

Jimmy Kimmel will return to host at Hollywood's Dolby Theatre – and recently warned fans that they could be in for some drama.

Referring to last year’s fiasco, which saw La La Land wrongly announced as Best Picture, he said: “If you think we screwed up the ending [last] year, wait until you see what we have planned for the 90th anniversary show.”
