Oscars 2020: Eminem reunites with 'uncle' Elton John backstage at Academy Awards

Eminem and Elton John's unlikely friendship has clearly endured across the decades as the rapper was delighter to be reunited with the music legend at the 2020 Oscars.

The pair posed for a picture in what appeared to be a backstage dressing room in a picture posted to the Not Afraid singer's Twitter.

"I got to see my Uncle Elton tonight at the Oscars. Congrats on your win too, Sir! @eltonofficial," he wrote.

Their friendship dates back to a performance of Stan at the 2001 Grammy Awards which came off the back of criticism directed at Eminem who considered lyrics on his third LP, The Marshall Mathers LP, to be homophobic and misogynistic.

John, 72, supported Eminem, real name Marshall Mathers, by performing at the ceremony where he played the keyboards and sang Dido's part in the track, before the pair embraced at the end of the performance.

The I'm Still Standing singer also presented Eminem with the award for International Male at the 2001 Brit Awards, and the pair have maintained a relationship.

In 2011, John told Rolling Stone that while he didn't "see much of Marshall" they "spoke a lot".

The rapper made a surprise appearance at the 92nd Academy Awards to perform Lose Yourself, which we won the Best Original Song accolade for in 2003 on the 8 Mile soundtrack.

John and his long-time songwriting partner Bernie Taupin picked up the prize for Best Original Song at the ceremony for '(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again' from Rocketman.

It's the second time the Your Song hitmaker has won the gong, having first nabbed it alongside lyricist Tim Rice for Lion King's ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight’ in 1994.
