Yahoo News Oscars Snubs: Greta Gerwig Left Out of Director Race, Margot Robbie and Leonardo DiCaprio Fail to Land Acting Nods
It was a big morning for Barbie when the 2024 Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday. The Warner Bros. film scored eight nominations, including one for the top prize of best picture. But Greta Gerwig was unexpectedly left out of the best director category, and star Margot Robbie failed to land a best actress nod for her role as the titular character in the summer box-office smash.
Gerwig is nominated with partner Noah Baumbach in the best adapted screenplay category for their Barbie script and Robbie, as one of Barbie‘s producers, is nominated for best picture and would take home an Oscar if the film wins the top prize.

Meanwhile, fellow Barbie star America Ferrera was somewhat of a surprise inclusion in the best supporting actress category, as she missed out on precursor nominations at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs and Screen Actors Guild Awards, where she is nominated as part of the Barbie cast, and pundits weren’t sure if she’d make the cut at the Oscars.
Outside of Barbie, Oscar winner and frequent nominee Leonardo DiCaprio was also a surprise snub as he failed to land a nomination for best actor for his role in 10-time nominee Killers of the Flower Moon. And the film was unexpectedly left out of the adapted screenplay race.
Other surprise omissions from the 2024 Oscar nominations include American Symphony, Beyond Utopia and Still: A Michael J. Fox left out of the documentary feature category; Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles left out of the animated feature category; Fallen Leaves (from Finland) and The Taste of Things (from frequent nominee France) not nominated in the international feature category; Poor Things‘ Willem Dafoe not nominated for best supporting actor; and The Zone of Interest‘s Sandra Hüller not landing her second Oscar nom of the morning in the supporting actress category (though Hüller was nominated in the best actress category for Anatomy of a Fall).
In the best director category, Maestro helmer Bradley Cooper was somewhat surprisingly left out (though Cooper landed a best actor nod and ones for screenplay and best picture as one of Maestro’s producers). The Holdovers‘ Alexander Payne was another surprise omission from the category after landing a Directors Guild Award nod, and American Fiction‘s Cord Jefferson was also not nominated for best director despite his film landing five nominations.
And despite scoring early nods from the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, Independent Spirit Awards and Gotham Awards, where he won, May December‘s Charles Melton failed to make the cut for the best supporting actor category at the Oscars. Similarly, May December as a whole underperformed at the Oscars, only landing one nomination (for original screenplay). Another surprise single nominee: The Color Purple, which only saw actress Danielle Brooks land a supporting nod. The lack of recognition for The Color Purple, including in the best picture category, also seems like somewhat of a slight to producer Oprah Winfrey, who has been prominently supporting the film.
And some Oscar hopefuls were shut out entirely: Air, All of Us Strangers, Ferrari, Origin and Saltburn.
In terms of surprises, a few Oscar favorites and veterans in the industry scored nominations some pundits weren’t expecting: Edward Lachman (up for best cinematography for El Conde), Diane Warren (up for best song for her Flamin’ Hot offering) and John Williams (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny).
Robot Dreams was an unexpected inclusion in the animated feature category as was Io Capitano in international feature.
