Outlander fans are excitedly gearing up for the fourth season, so in the true spirit of the show let's look backwards (as well as forwards).

In this case, let's draw back to the first ever episode of the show, where one scene depicted a mysterious man in a kilt watching Frank (Tobias Menzies) looking up at a window.

The identity of that man has now been unveiled... and it is none other than Jamie (Sam Heughan).

"It hasn't been explained and hopefully we get to that point where we can explain it, but Diana [Gabaldon] has said many times that it is Jamie Fraser," executive producer Maril Davis confirmed at the show's For Your Consideration panel in Los Angeles (via Variety).

Actor Heughan added: "Diana has written that scene, and she showed it to a few of us. It's to be revealed."

We guess we'll just have to wait a bit longer for some answers.

Following the next batch of episodes, it looks like a fifth season of the Starz show is a dead cert – despite nothing being officially confirmed yet.

However, executive producer Ronald D Moore has revealed that he is absolutely sure it will be going ahead, explaining: "We are certainly going to do it. I have no doubt we are doing a season five."

Meanwhile, executive producer Matthew B Roberts recently told Digital Spy on a set visit that the show is very much a "separate thing" from the Gabaldon novels it is based on.

"I see it that the books are the parents and the show is the children," he said. "They have the same DNA but it is a different being, a different personality.

"If you let that thing grow you can enjoy it as a separate thing. The challenge for every season is to get it right for the TV show."

Season four of Outlander is expected to air later this year, while season three is out on DVD now.
