Outlander’s seventh season has finally returned to screens to continue the epic adventures of Claire (played by Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) through history.

After returning home to Scotland in the 18th Century, their daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and her husband Roger MacKenzie (Richard Rankin) face their own ordeal in the 1980s.

When their son Jemmy (Blake Johnston Miller) disappears, they realise Brianna’s new colleague Rob Cameron (Chris Fulton) must have abducted him in search of hidden treasure he uncovered with his grandad Jamie.

Roger, along with his newly emerged ancestor William ‘Buck’ MacKenzie (Diarmaid Murtagh), are forced to travel back in time again through the stones at Craigh na Dun, convinced they’ll find him in the 1700s.

However, some fans are not so convinced that Rob time travelled after all, with one key clue pointing at a huge misdirect.

One fan recently took to Reddit to ask: “I might’ve missed it but did Roger and Bree confirm Rob could time travel? And if so how did they?

“Because I would think that he just has Jemmy somewhere in their time bc he does not have the gene.”

In the Outlander universe, only some people are born with the innate ability to travel through time, such as Claire and her daughter Brianna. Jamie, however, cannot time travel.

As there is no way of telling whether he has the gene or not, it’s probably much safer to assume Rob can’t traverse the stones as travellers are exceedingly rare.

Moreover, there’s every chance the gold is still in the exact same spot in the present day.

Another fan pointed out: “What I don’t get (and something I haven’t seen brought up) is why does he think they have to go to the past for the gold?

“I would think the gold would very likely still be where Jaime hid it, even 200 years later. I thought that was the idea, anyway.”

Although another viewer argued: “Jem likely wouldn’t be able to find it 200 years later. The whole area would look vastly different.

“Jem has great instincts but he’s just a kid…not much one could do if a road was paved or a building built over it.”

While someone else explained: “Roger and Buck, went to the stones and found Jemmy's scarf laying on the floor.

“They knew Rob read about time travel, and about the gold (the letters in the study), so they assumed Rob took Jemmy to the past to get the gold.”

Roger is still convinced they’ll find Jemmy back in the past and the stones even have a strange way of taking travellers to the exact place they need to go.

As Roger and Buck did, in fact, travel to the 18th Century when they passed through Craigh na Dun, will they be able to hunt down Rob Cameron or stumble upon an entirely new quest?

Outlander season seven part two continues Fridays on MGM+ via Prime Video in the UK and on Starz in the US.
