This will be the penultimate season of the popular show after it was announced the eighth season would be its last.

However, fans won't need to say their final goodbyes to Outlander just yet as a prequel series is in the works.

The prequel, which will also include 10 episodes, will focus on an unlikely love story – that of Jamie's parents Ellen and Brian.

Matthew B Roberts, showrunner and executive producer, explained: "Outlander: Blood of My Blood is, at its heart, a love story.

"It will explore what lengths a person will go to find love in a time when love is considered a luxury, and when marriages are made strategically, often for political or financial gain."

Outlander airs on Starz in the US, and streams on Lionsgate+ in the UK.
