Outlander's Claire Fraser star Caitriona Balfe reveals she 'almost drowned' on set

Outlander star Caitriona Balfe, who plays protagonist Claire Fraser in the popular Starz series, has opened up about one particularly challenging filming experience.

The star spoke about her many reunion scenes with Jamie Fraser actor Sam Heughan, who has been her on-screen husband for the past 11 years.

Based on the popular nine-book series by Diana Gabaldon, Outlander is now in the midst of concluding its penultimate season, with the eighth and final installment set to premiere late next year.

Ahead of season 7 part 2, Caitriona opened up about the many scenes that see her running towards Jamie to kiss him as they inevitably reunite after being ripped apart.

Speaking to She Knows, the actress reflected: “Weirdly, they don’t go wrong that much, although Sam is just so big and strong that quite often, I’ll run into him, and it’s literally like hitting a brick wall.

“So, I usually get a bit winded. I’m always like, ‘Oh God, ugh!’ [mimics running into Heughan], which you just make look like pangs of passion. I don’t know, again, it’s just that weird thing that we’ve been doing it so long that it just sort of seems second nature."

Confirming her favourite reunion moment over the seasons, Caitriona said: “I mean, just because it’s so… kind of cliché, but kind of amazing, and you always sort of want to do one of them in your life, but the running on the beach in season 3!”

However, it seems things weren’t so romantic behind the scenes, as the stunning shot apparently led to the two leads getting drenched in water.

Caitriona explained: “We did almost get drowned, as well. I can’t remember exactly, there was a photo shoot where we sort of replicated it.

“And in one or the other, we were having the kiss, and then we were on the beach, and then the tide was coming in, so we were getting washed and splattered. But yeah, that one has to be the most obvious romantic one.”

The 14th episode of Outlander season 7 titled ‘Ye Dinna Get Used to It’ dropped just today, and fans are now on tenterhooks to see what twists might await them in the season finale.
