Shoppers have told of their outrage after bargain high-street store Poundworld started stocking items for more than £1.

Furious customers have taken to social media to complain about the apparent policy change, with items selling for more as much as £4 now appearing on shelves.

It is believed the scheme was introduced over the last few months, with the store introducing the pricier products simply to “extend the range”.

But shoppers have taken to social media to blast the store.

One angry customer tweeted: “What the hell? Why does Poundworld suddenly have stuff that’s not £1 all over its shelves?”

Paul Haggie tweeted: “Was in Darlington store and there are so many products more than £1 mixed in. Very misleading and not manager specials.

He added: “If you had a separate section then fair enough but it was mixed in. Kinda makes a mockery of your ethos.”

Another said: “Don't understand why Poundland and Poundworld still call themselves that when it's not anymore.”

Offers now placed next to budget items reportedly include Johnson’s Bedtime Baby Oil for £1.50, Surf Fragrance Release washing liquid for £3, and Dairy Box chocolates for £4.

Poundworld stores consist of more than 6,000 items including groceries, health and beauty, toiletries, cleaning products and pet care, with more than 340 stores across the UK.

A spokesman told the Sun: “We stock over 6,000 products priced at £1 and will continue to do so. We are simply extending our range.”
