Upcoming works on the A180 concrete section this autumn will include overnight closures.

National Highways has confirmed the schedule for works later this year to take place on the A180 between Brocklesby Junction and the M180 Junction, by Barnetby-le-Wold. The repairs aim to extend the life of the surface for another five years.

This is ahead of a provisional plan for the replacement of the concrete surface in the future. It is estimated this will cost in the region of £300m and is planned for the third Roads Investment Strategy period, which covers 2025-2030.

The life extension works this autumn will cost £8m and see 200 concrete bays replaced. It will begin on October 11, when a works compound will be at Poplar Farm near the A160 Habrough roundabout.

There will be carriageway closures each night, from 8pm to 6am. A carriageway lane will remain closed day and night to allow concrete curing, before being reopened to traffic. The works are planned in two phases, though the exact timetable will be weather dependent:

  • Westbound carriageway, from October 11 to November 28

  • Eastbound carriageway, from November 29 to December 19.

The westbound carriageway has the most damaged bays, which is why it is first up for repairs. National Highways are also not seeking the lifting of weight limit restrictions in place for Ulceby, during the A180 works. The restrictions prevent HGVs using the rural village as a cut-through.

National Highways has been in regular contact with Ferry Ward Cllr Richard Hannigan and Ulceby Road Safety Group as the work plans have developed. Stewart Smith from the safety group, Cllr Hannigan and National Highways met on September 2 and are set to meet again a week before the works begin.

The A180's concrete surface was discussed in Parliament earlier this month, as part of a debate on northern Lincolnshire transport, secured by Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes MP, Melanie Onn. She described the current experience for motorists on the concrete section as a "juddering journey".

Transport minister Lilian Greenwood said noise assessments in May of the A180 near Stallingborough found levels consistent with expected noise from the A180's level of traffic. There have been three road surface improvements on the A180 in the last year, and the autumn works will be the fourth. The minister added: "Subject to confirmation of funding, additional road surface treatment work is planned for the third Roads Investment Strategy period and when finished, this should substantially reduce noise levels along the route."
